What people say about us

Some kind words from our alumni

“Fantastic!”

I thoroughly recommend infohackit to any research scientists interested improving their design skills. The experience I have gained from infohackit applies not only to the research posters I make, but also influences the way I think about figures, diagrams, and graphs. Peter and Lucy are also fantastic and welcoming instructors, and available to offer their advice and feedback whenever it is needed. As a result of this course, I feel more confident communicating my research visually, and now make an effort to produce a graphical abstract for every conference paper and journal article I prepare. This has also had the pleasant side-effect of increasing the amount of Twitter interactions I receive concerning my work!

“Invaluable!”

Joining the infohackit course has been one of the highlights of my PhD programme. Having the opportunity to develop my visual communication skills, with a research/scientific specific focus has been invaluable. The programme is extremely flexible, can be taken at your own pace, and divided up into bite-size classes that focus on a particular skill, for example, ‘designing a poster’ or ‘how to use pens, pencils and brushes’. The process of creating visuals and infographics helped me to cement my understanding of my own research field, and the pieces I produced have become a great resource to use in presentations and for outreach. I get excited for opportunities to use the skills I have learnt. The organisers, Lucy and Peter, are also absolute legends, which is the cherry on the top.

“Game-changing!”

The infohackit course was really game-changing for me. I had long wanted to try digital design but had never taken the plunge or had opportunity to explore the techniques until attending this course. Peter’s friendly and thoughtful teaching style means that you can follow along each workshop easily (from anywhere) and you find yourself eagerly continuing example projects in your own time to keep developing new skills. Peter’s background in graphic design is really helpful for understanding the principles behind the techniques you learn, and the course really does change the way you visualise concepts. After attending all of the workshops, I looked forward to creating a poster for a conference and was able to create a piece that won a prize. However, the course also gave me the confidence to explore graphical design away from my research and use my newfound illustration skills for other science communication projects – a field I am pursuing as a career. What better legacy can a course have than inspiring people to share science in a creative way.
